- Wow much is the winemaking process, the barrels, the transportation, storage costs, marketing, finance, personnel, etc.
- Steep slopes in the Rheingau or along the Mosel are much more costly to manage than the vineyards in the plane of the Ribera del Duero or in Coonawarra

Sometimes these wines are just produced in low quantities of 100 liters and the fermentation often takes several years. These factors consequently increase risks, take a lot of time and cause huge capital commitments.

Fine Wine Market
To create a fine wine and establish it in the market,
you need to master some tasks:
- The winemaker must find the right vineyards
- plant the right vines (clones)
- experiment with the handling of the grapes and the vineyard

Wine Prices And Movements Since 2000
Since 2000, vineyards all over the world adjusted their wine prices. First the vintages 2005 and 2008 experienced high price increase, other vintages followed and went also through price adjustments.
In this time Wine journalists have been using words like "vintages of the century" and "legends“to describe the wines of the world´s most prestige wine region „Bordeaux".
Due to the climate change the probability to harvest an increasing number of good vintages is rising. An old rule, not only known in Bordeaux says: "The better the vintage, the higher the demand and therefore the prices."
Many experienced wine journalists and observers believe that the fine wine market live to see certain imbalance, which menace and probably bring it out of control. This belief persists, nevertheless price adjustments were proportional high. The observed price capers and price drops of Chateau Lafite, first in Russia, later in Asia and now price on the secondary market, are directly related to that matter of fact.
Additionally the market was unsettled by the fact that more counterfeit wines came on it. Many wineries reacted consequently by introducing new security systems for the vintages since 2007 – 2008, which clearly definite the origin of each bottle and thereby complicate counterfeiting.
There is genuine hope that this issue, at least up from the vintages 2007 – 2008 is negligible.
In order to understand the price developments of the last years, especially the impact of the drastic price adjustments and movements for the vintages 2000, 2005 and 2008, Wine-Stocks analyzed the vintages of each wine region in the world and their performances.
(The price adjustment for 2009 cannot be studied statistically significantly for the moment - it is not clear how the market will react to these prices)
Wine-Stocks analyzed the most traded wines of each region, concerning their performance for the vintages 1982 -to 2008.
For Bordeaux wines a detailed analysis has been done.

Fine Wine Prices Resume
Bordeaux possesses many wineries that reached good performance on the market.
The increase is even higher than the average of the last 20 years. Almost certainly this is due to the fact of price adjustments of the vintages 2005 and 2008.
From a retro perspective point of view, we notice that there is a relation between wine prices and the economy of each country, fine wines represents, also in times of crisis a secure investment, often even better than gold.
Wine Performance Over The History
If we take a look at the WIN 100, WIN 500 and WIN 50 we notice that fine wine up to now nearly is unsusceptible for crises.

Price increase since 2005 is due to the strong demand from Asia. Some observers wonder whether for this particular market, where emphasis is put on tradition and integrity, a little more sensitive and proactive behavior would not have been better.
Apparently consumers recognize discrepancy between the prices of the "smaller, less known Chateaux" in relation to the prestige, famous ones. In the same way the Asian consumers have learned how to elicit price-equivalent relations. "Poor vintages“reach higher prices than the widely praised vintages like 2000, 2005 and 2009. The vintages 1982, 1986.1990, stayed the same and even dropped sharply.
Especially the famous and prestige names from Bordeaux went down significantly. It remains to be seen whether this trend is confirmed in the coming months. The fact of the increasing number of good vintages in Bordeaux, that currently does not appears in the statistics, but still could be of great importance in the future, need to be observed.
Consequently the consumer has wider range of vintages and thus decreases the shortage of supply. In addition new regions of the world enter consequently the market with their wines. In the auction market, it has become quite normal that wines from California, Washington, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina and Australia are offered.
Also, these wines have proven that they have an excellent aging potential, the basic condition for performance. California has nearly the same number of wineries that reach the same price increase and performances with their wines, as Bordeaux.

Aleae Iactae Sunt
From 2008 prices of the Grand Vin Chateau Latour and Cheval Blanc has been moved sharply upwards. Older vintages, which are closer to the maturity, are much cheaper than these young vintages. With an average drinkability of 25 to 50 years, the freshness of the wine is probably not an important issue.
So you can spend 1000€ for a new bottle of Cheval Blanc and Chateau Latour or buy, at almost every wine auction of the world, a bottle of Cheval Blanc with good maturity and still storage potential, for half of the price.
Rumors say, that even for the most prestige wineries in Bordeaux the production cost for one 750 ml bottle does not exceed the 25€. Consequently the return must be just immense. If this the case, it makes sense, that more and more investors enter the fine wine market and a willing to pay peak prices for wines and even hole wineries and consequently need to achieve higher profit margins.
This situation certainly bears its share of the price increase for fine wines and was confirmed by customer's purchase activities.
